Thomas was first introduced to 3D imaging technology while completing his undergraduate studies where he majored in Palaeobiology and Indigenous Studies. Thomas further developed his skills around 3D imaging techniques while learning to explore and digitise specimens in Australian, US and Canadian museums while collecting data for his Masters of Research. While completing his studies Thomas worked as a freelance 3D imaging specialist digitising museum and teaching collections. Thomas now utilises his extensive experience with structured light scanning, photogrammetry and computed tomography (CT) to image objects from all collections at the Australian Museum as part of the Collections Enhancement Project. He now also assists with other advanced imaging techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and focus stacking photography. Thomas is interested in how different imaging technologies are used by museums to preserve and improve accessibility to their collections for both researchers and the public.
